No more Blue Flags for Durban beaches as their fecal count is too high!
The international Blue Flag organisation says that it will not beg Durban to stay in the Blue Flag programme because it had no choice but to revoke its approval of four of the city’s beaches.
Speaking to The Times from Denmark, the organisation’s international co-ordinator, Elena von Sperber, said it did not force any country to participate in its programme.
“It is the municipality that applies to receive a Blue Flag because of the status attached to it. We will not beg, and cannot force, a municipality to stay in the programme. It is very simple.
“Blue flags are awarded to beaches that fulfil certain criteria. Four of Durban’s beaches [previously] fulfilled those criteria but at this stage they don’t, so the flags were removed. It happens all the time,” she said.
