K1 Visa purchase a rifle

Question by Louisa: Can a new immigrant on a K1 fiance visa purchase a rifle in Maryland?
I am an Australian woman moving to Maryland to marry my American fiance. I will be entering on a K1 fiance visa and have a green card to work, so that makes me an immigrant. I want to buy my fiance a rifle for his birthday, can I buy one without being an American citizen?

Yes, you can but first you will need to get a Maryland Driver’s license or identification card. This is because you have to show that your a Maryland resident before you can purchase the rifle. On the other hand you need to be a US citizen to own a rifle for starters. Planning on killing your new spouse?

Technically, no. Even if you were a citizen, it’s called a Straw purchase (A buyer purchasing a rifle to be owned by someone else), and hense, illegal. Question #11.a on the 4473 specifies this. He would have to do the background check and the paperwork for it for it to be legal.
