White S. African guilty in deaths of 4 blacks

A white teenager has pleaded guilty in a shooting spree that killed four blacks and reignited racial tensions in post-apartheid South Africa.

South Africa media report that 18-year-old Johan Nel pleaded guilty as his trial started Monday in Mmabatho, 300 kilometers (180 miles) north of Johannesburg. Prosecutors then began presenting evidence that could influence sentencing, expected this week.

Witnesses say Nel began firing on children in a poor black settlement Jan. 14. The dead included a 3-month-old who was being carried on her mother’s back. The 31-year-old mother, a 10-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man also died.
