In the final hours of her short life, seven-year-old Gofaone Tyatya lay raped and beaten in an open veld, while the police failed to respond to frantic calls from family members - claiming that there were no vehicles available.Gofaone’s bruised body was found by a Zandspruit, Honeydew, resident - about 600m away from her home - when he returned from work at around 8am on Monday morning. He knew it was Gofaone because the community had conducted a wide-spread search into the night after they discovered the Grade 2 girl had gone missing between 4.30pm and 5pm on Sunday afternoon.

‘We thought she was playing with friends’
She had spent Sunday afternoon with her mother, Evelyn Tyatya, 28, completing an art assignment and preparing for school the next morning. She then played merrily with friends in the house, until they were told to play outside because they were making a noise. That was the last time relatives saw her alive. Boitumela Tyatya, Gofaone’s aunt and guardian, began to panic when she had not returned home after 5pm.
“She was such a quiet girl. She would always come home straight after school while the other kids would play around, so we got worried,” she said. Relatives said they called the Honeydew police station at around 6pm to report the child missing, but were told “there are no vehicles”.

‘I’m not coping’
They tried again at 10pm after police had failed to respond to their first call and were allegedly told that it was too dark and dangerous. A distraught Evelyn Tyatya, who returned to Zandspruit from her Krugersdorp home on Monday morning after hearing the news, broke down in tears. “I feel bad because I didn’t know where she was. We thought she was playing with friends,” she said.Gofaone’s death is a double tragedy for Tyatya, who lost her 11-month-old son to an illness three weeks ago.
“I’m not coping,” she said as tears rolled down her cheek. She felt that if police had arrived earlier, perhaps her little girl would still be alive. Honeydew police spokesperson Inspector Karen Jacobs did not deny the police incompetence allegations made by relatives but said: “Everything in this case will be investigated. Whether the police didn’t do their job properly, it will be investigated.
“Jacobs confirmed that Gofaone had been strangled. On the rape charge, she said: “There is a possibility that she was raped, but we cannot confirm anything until the autopsy has been done on Tuesday.
“Zandspruit community leader Victor Mafinya slammed the police’s failure to respond to their calls and the “unacceptable” reasons they cited.”We are not happy because when we phone the police they don’t come. On Monday, we called them to report the child missing and they said there are no vehicles.
“When we call them at night, they say it’s too dark and Zandspruit is too dangerous for them,” Mafinya said.
